PRETORIA

Pretoria, long considered strictly a
city of science and technology and
hub of knowledge and industry, used
to land on the tourism map once a
year, during its annual Jacaranda blossoms.
A recent boom of restaurants and clubs,
though, makes the case for permanent place-
ment. Leading the city’s transformation is its
growing food district, where spots like Priva
Gastrolounge, offers a sexiness that isn’t un-
seemly. In the city centre, there is a selection
of fantastic new and stalwart restaurants with
menus for all taste buds.
Where there is good food there is good
shopping. Markets have added cachet to the
neighbourhood; the first Market@theSheds
took place in October in the Pretoria CBD.
Showcasing local talent with art, music, food
and design. The Great Mood & Food Market
also rocked in October on the corner of
Jorrisen & Rivier Street. The emergence of a
hip, modern scene is slowly evolving.
With historical roots dating back to the
1600’s, the old architecture around the city
has been well maintained and preserved
giving the city a unique blend of old-world
charm and trendy vibe. Several landmark
buildings are dotted throughout the city, and
these signature properties designed by Sir
Herbert Baker are now trademark in the area.
The centre of the city is rich in history.
Here you will find architectural gems such
as the African Window Museum, the Palace
of Justice, the Old Capitol Theatre, the Paul
Kruger statue, the Tudor Chambers and the
General Post Office. For those interested
in the natural side of Pretoria, the Pretoria
National Botanical Gardens offers more than
5000 indigenous plant species.
